The anatomy

What makes a great place cards.

Three parts: the paper in hand, the type on the paper, and the finishing that ties them together. Get all three right and it reads as one object.

The paper

Stock weight (110–300gsm), fiber (wood, cotton, recycled), surface (matte, eggshell, pearlescent). The hand-feel sets the tone before a guest reads a word.

The type

Display serif for keepsake formality, sans for modern restraint, script for warmth. One typeface family, two weights, never more.

The finish

Foil, letterpress, deboss, edge paint, deckle edge. One finishing technique per piece — pick the one that does the heaviest lift.

The size

Standard sizes mail without surcharge. Square pieces and oversize cards trigger postal upcharges; plan the budget accordingly.

The match

Your place cards should reconcile with the rest of the suite — same palette, same typeface, same paper family. One event, not five.

Specs at scale

Vellum overlay

Archival

How long does printed place cards last?

Stored dark, dry, and acid-free, here's what each stock holds up over time.

100+
Years · Cotton + archival ink
Letterpress on cotton with oil-based archival ink is the gold standard. Same construction as 19th-century legal documents.
50+
Years · Cardstock + pearl
Cardstock and pearlescent stocks hold up for decades but may yellow at the edges over 30+ years.
25–40
Years · Vellum overlay
Vellum is the weak link in any suite — it yellows first. Store separately in archival sleeves.
Glossary

Printing terms, defined.

If you've heard the term but couldn't quite explain it, it's probably here.

GSM
Grams per square meter. The weight of paper. Higher GSM means thicker, stiffer, more expensive.
Bleed
The 1/8" margin around the cut edge that holds the design when paper is trimmed. Backgrounds extend into the bleed; text never sits in it.
Cotton paper
Made from cotton fibers rather than wood pulp. Softer, more absorbent, archival.
Deckle edge
The intentionally rough, torn-looking edge on a piece of paper. Hand-made-looking even when machine-cut.
Foil debossing
Metallic foil pressed into the paper with a heated die. Foil sticks where the die heats it.
Letterpress
Ink applied via a relief die that physically presses into the paper. You can feel it.
Digital print
Direct from file to ink-jet or laser. Fast, cheap, full-color. Sits on top of the paper.
Vellum
Translucent, paper-thin overlay. Used to layer text over imagery.

Frequently asked

Place Cards FAQ.

Short answers. Email hello@gishme.com if something's missing.

What is the minimum order quantity for place cards?

25 pieces is the typical floor for cotton, letterpress, foil and pearlescent. Standard cardstock can drop to 10 for sample runs at a higher per-piece price. Some keepsake pieces (acrylic signs, photo books, doormats) order in quantities of 1.

How early should I order place cards?

Mail printed pieces 4 to 10 weeks before the event depending on category. Order 6 to 14 weeks ahead to allow proofing, press time and addressing.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Inkgility ships worldwide. North America: 2 to 5 business days ground. EU/UK: 5 to 8 business days. Rest of world: 7 to 14 business days.

Can I order a sample first?

Yes. Single-sample pricing is typically $8 to $14 depending on stock. Sample cost credits back if you place a 50+ piece order within 30 days.

What paper stocks do you offer?

Standard cardstock (110gsm matte or eggshell), 100% cotton (300gsm), pearlescent shimmer (260gsm) and translucent vellum overlay (95gsm).

What if there is a typo on my order?

A digital proof goes out before press. If a typo from your edit slips past approval, reprints are 40% off retail. If the typo is on Inkgility's side, reprint and reship are free.

Is your paper sustainable?

All cotton and cardstock is FSC-certified. Inks are lead-free, soy-based on cardstock and oil-based archival on cotton. Cutoffs are recycled at facility.

Can I use my own designer's files?

Yes. Upload print-ready PDFs (300dpi, CMYK, 1/8" bleed). Inkgility reviews for printability before press. Custom die work for foil and letterpress is quoted separately.

How does place cards pricing scale with quantity?

Per-piece cost drops sharply between 25 and 100 pieces, then flattens. 250 and 500 piece runs unlock the best per-unit price.

Can I match my place cards to other paper goods?

Yes. Every bundle has matching save-the-date, RSVP, menu, program, place card and thank-you templates. Bundles are discounted versus piecemeal.

Do you offer rush production?

Yes. Rush options range from 3-day expedited (1.5×) to next-day (3×). Stock and finishing limits apply — letterpress and foil cannot rush below 4 days.

Are proofs free?

Three rounds of digital proofs free with every order. Additional proof rounds $15 each.
