An Eid gathering, rooted in prayer.

Two Eids — Eid al-Fitr at the close of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha during Hajj. Both center morning prayer, family gathering, and gifts to children. The template carries both, with the distinct customs of each.

Sunni and Shia communities, and families across North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Levant, sub-Saharan Africa, and the diaspora celebrate differently. The template offers the common arc and toggles for tradition.

A common arc for both Eids, with Eid al-Adha adding the qurbani (sacrifice) and three days of celebration.

Chand raat
Moon-sighting evening — markets stay open late, henna applied, last preparations made. Especially festive before Eid al-Fitr.

Ghusl & new clothes
Ritual cleansing, then dressing in new or finest clothes. Often family members dressed coordinated.

Eid morning
Zakat / sadaqat al-Fitr
For Eid al-Fitr — obligatory charity (fitrana) given before prayer so the poor can also celebrate. For Eid al-Adha — qurbani meat distribution.

Eid prayer (Salat al-Eid)
Congregational prayer at mosque, eidgah, or open ground. Often takes place mid-morning; the day's centerpiece.

Embrace & "Eid Mubarak"
Embraces with three taps on the shoulder (regional), greetings of Eid Mubarak / Eid Saeed exchanged with everyone.

Sweet breakfast
Sheer khurma (South Asia), maamoul (Levant), kahk (Egypt), kueh (Southeast Asia) — the day-of dish varies dramatically by region.

Family visits & eidi
Visiting elders, neighbors, friends — house to house. Elders give eidi (cash gifts) to children at each home.

Qurbani & meat sharing
Eid al-Adha: ritual sacrifice (where customary and lawful), meat divided in thirds — family, relatives, the needy. Three days of feasts follow.
